Kodak Verita 200D released

Currently only available for filmmakers

Big news from Kodak! It has announced the release of Verita 200D for movie makers. The back story here is that this new stock was developed for use on Euphoria but not a huge amount has been said about that. Kodak is highlighting the benefits of this new film though, as you would image.

The big selling points seem to be focused on a classic movie look, with great skin tones and more punch, so richer shadows and, interestingly, less dynamic range. While digital cameras put so much emphasis on higher dynamic range it’s actually nice to see Kodak talking about this, as I think dynamic range has become something of a fashion statement recently. There are of course benefits to retaining detail at the extremes of exposure but the risk is that results end up looking too clinically perfect, losing some of the character. Of course this can be dealt with in the grade but if you can get the look you want from your film stock and not have to worry about the time and expense of having a colourist do this work then I’m all for that.

Verita has an antistatic, dust prevention coating, as well as an anti-halation layer and it’s developed using ECN2. Daylight balance is 5500K with no reciprocity compensation needed from 1 - 1/1000th of a second. More technical data can be found in the data sheet.

What does this mean for still photographers? We don’t know yet but it’s likely that it will become available at some point, other with Kodak releasing it, or with a third party respelling it and it is available in 16mm, 35mm and 65mm so we could see it being made for medium format too, which I would love to try for myself.

As and when more info is made available I’ll update this post.
